Inhlangano Yama Zion WaseVaal: A journey of unity and music

Founded by Falakhe Makakula in 2017 at Sebokeng Zone 12, Inhlangano Yama Zion WaseVaal began as a family singing for fun. Their casual harmonies caught the attention of a music producer, who invited them to a studio to record an album.

What started as a family pastime soon evolved into a musical movement. In 2018, the group released their debut album, ‘Yilo Lodwa Igama’. As the years passed, Makakula gathered more choristers, leading to the release of their second album, ‘Ngizolibonga’ in 2022. That same year, Makakula collaborated with Nkosana Phakathi, who later took the reins of the project. Phakathi has since assembled a new team of choristers for the upcoming third album, ‘Siyamenywa Sonke” set for release this year.

The core vision of Inhlangano Yama Zion WaseVaal has remained constant: to unite Zion choristers from various churches in the Vaal, fostering support and strengthening the Zion music community.

“I pray that with this movement, the choristers from the Vaal can support and uplift one another,” says Makakula.

“I also hope it leads to growth within different churches-musically, spiritually and even in how we present ourselves through updated church uniforms that reflect the times,” he shared.

The mission of Inhlangano Yama Zion WaseVaal is deeply rooted in four key areas:

1. Sharing the joy of music and inspiring the community through exceptional choral performances. Fostering a culture of excellence, inclusivity and creativity. Preserving and promoting choral music while uniting diverse communities.

2. Spiritual growth and worship using music as a tool to glorify God and spread messages of love, hope and inspiration. Strengthening faith communities through music. Creating a sacred space for worship and reflection.

3. Building a stronger community and promoting unity and social cohesion through music. Providing a platform for self-expression and personal growth. Showcasing the beauty and diversity of choral music.

4. Educating, empowering future generations and inspiring young singers to develop their musical talents. Offering opportunities for growth, exploration and innovation. Providing resources for music education, including workshops and masterclasses.

With each album, Inhlangano Yama Zion WaseVaal continues to strengthen its legacy. Phakathi hopes this tradition will live on, inspiring future generations to carry the vision forward and ensure that Zion music remains a unifying force in the Vaal.
