Kanana Park rapist sentenced to 20 years
In a recent display of exceptional investigative work, law enforcement successfully solved a high-stake case involving a 23-year-old suspect who preyed on a vulnerable 16-year-old pregnant victim.
The case, which highlights the dedication and resourcefulness of the investigating team, involved the use of advanced technology, collaboration with outside agencies and meticulous investigative work to bring the suspect to justice.
On the evening of Saturday, 14 October 2023, the victim, a Grade 11 learner, was walking home through a passageway in Kanana Park, Extension 3, De Deur, when she encountered her neighbour, the suspect. According to her statement, the suspect brandished a firearm, threatened her with a knife and raped her.
The investigating officer, Sergeant CP Pretorius of the Vereeniging Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, led a thorough investigation. Utilizing advanced tools and techniques, including the deployment of a drone owned by the Midvaal Peace Officers, the police traced the suspect to a drug house. When the suspect attempted to flee, the drone was used to search the area and pressure was applied through his family to ensure his surrender.
The successful resolution of this case is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of Sergeant CP Pretorius, Detective Warrant Officer AD Pienaar, Steven van der Walt and the dedicated Midvaal Peace Officers, and the Vereeniging FCS Unit. Sergeant Pretorius’s meticulous attention to detail, use of innovative tools, and collaboration with outside agencies ensured that justice was served.On 5 March 2025, the suspect was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for rape and 18 months for contravening the Firearms Control Act.
The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently and declared the suspect unfit to possess a firearm. His details were also added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
