Midvaal launches Local Drug Action Committee

Midvaal Local Municipality has officially established and appointed the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) as part of its ongoing commitment to fighting the growing problem of substance abuse in local communities. In accordance with Chapter 10, Section 60 of the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act (Act 70 of 2008), municipalities are required to form Local Drug Action Committees to coordinate and implement community-based responses to substance abuse.

The Executive Mayor, Alderman Peter Teixeira, together with the Members of the Mayoral Committee, officially appointed the LDAC during a special ceremony to mark this important milestone.

The committee will include representatives from government departments, non-profit organisations, law enforcement, and other community stakeholders. Its responsibilities include developing, implementing, and monitoring local drug strategies; coordinating prevention and rehabilitation initiatives; and supporting individuals and families affected by substance abuse.

During his address, Mayor Teixeira described the initiative as both a legislative requirement and a moral duty. “Too many lives depend on the success of this initiative. It must not become a tick-box exercise but a living, functioning structure that gives hope to those trapped in addiction,” he said.

Midvaal Municipality reaffirmed its pledge to work towards a drug-free Midvaal, guided by compassion and community care.
