Champion of resilience: Smash Hadebe to defend WBO Africa Crown
South African boxing star, Simangele “Smash” Hadebe, will defend her WBO Africa title on 28 February 2026 at Silverlakes Farm Hotel – a fight she says is about far more than retaining a championship belt.
The highly anticipated match will see Hadebe take on unbeaten rising contender Soboois in what promises to be one of the standout boxing events of the year.
Hadebe, a South African Champion, two-time African Boxing Union (ABU) Champion and reigning WBO Africa Champion, is already regarded as one of the country’s most accomplished fighters. But behind her impressive record lies a personal journey marked by hardship and extraordinary resilience.
As a child, Hadebe endured severe abuse – trauma she carried silently for many years. Boxing eventually became her refuge, her therapy and her voice. Inside the ring, she found a way to channel anger and hurt into discipline and strength. “Every punch I throw is proof that what tried to break me did not succeed,” said Hadebe.
Throughout her career, one person has remained a constant source of guidance and support – her manager, Colleen McAusland. Their relationship goes far beyond the usual boxer-manager partnership. “Built on trust, protection, and unwavering belief, their close bond has played a critical role in Hadebe’s growth both as a champion and as a woman,” she added.
According to Hadebe, McAusland has been a steady anchor, ensuring that her career is guided with care, dignity, and purpose.
Her upcoming title defence is therefore more than a sporting contest. Smash added: “It is a symbol of resilience versus silence, courage versus fear. Each round tells a story of survival, hope and defiance.”
Behind the scenes, Hadebe has credited her success to a strong support system and loyal sponsors who make her training and preparation possible. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to RGM Cranes, Discover Sport, Midvaal Municipality, Brawl Gear and LiaMed for their ongoing backing.
Organisers say the event forms part of a growing movement that uses boxing as a platform for healing, awareness and positive social change.
Tickets for the fight are now available on iTickets.co.za at R850 per person, offering fans full venue access, all live professional bouts and on-site activations.
