Midvaal upgrades Savanna Pump Station to curb sewer overflows

Midvaal Local Municipality has completed a screen chamber upgrade at the Savanna Pump Station, aimed at improving reliability and preventing sewer overflows in the area.

The pump station, which serves Savanna City’s RDP and bonded housing sections, had experienced frequent breakdowns caused by debris such as rags, stones, wood and metal entering the system and damaging pumps. This led to operational disruptions, reduced efficiency and increased maintenance costs.

The newly installed screen chamber is designed to block foreign materials before they reach the pumps, improving system performance, reducing maintenance and extending equipment lifespan. It is also expected to make sump cleaning more efficient.

“This upgrade strengthens critical infrastructure, improves wastewater management, and helps protect the health and well-being of residents,” said the Midvaal Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Ald Peter Teixeira.

The facility currently uses a manual screening system, with provision for a future upgrade to a mechanical system.

Construction began in October 2025 and was completed in February 2026 at a cost of R998,712 excluding VAT, or R1.15 million including VAT.
