Matric learner shot dead during robbery in Walkerville
The Eldorado Park community is calling for justice after 17-year-old matric learner Jaylin Amore Visagie was shot and killed during a robbery in Walkerville on Sunday, 19 July 2026.
Jaylin was visiting her grandfather when she walked to a nearby shop with her younger brother and cousins.
According to information shared by the family, an armed man approached the group and demanded their belongings. He asked Jaylin for her cellphone, but she told him she did not have it.
The suspect reportedly fired at her younger brother and missed. As the other children ran away, he struck Jaylin, causing her to fall, before shooting her.
She died at the scene.
The family furthers states that the suspect made a racially offensive remark before the attack. However, the motive and full circumstances surrounding the shooting have not yet been confirmed by police.
Jaylin was a Grade 12 learner at Zakariyya Park Combined School and had been preparing to complete her matric year.
Her death has left her family, school and community devastated, with residents urging De Deur SAPS to identify and arrest the person responsible.
“Jaylin had dreams and her whole life ahead of her. She did not deserve to die this way,” a community representative said.
A candlelight service was held in her memory in Eldorado Park Extension 2, where relatives, friends and residents gathered to honour her life.
The community has called on anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist the police investigation.
