Recurring fights among learners at a scholar transport point in Highbury have prompted Meyerton SAPS to step up school safety efforts and warn young commuters about violence and unsafe behaviour.
Police visited the Sicelo White House scholar transport dispatch point on Thursday, 10 September, where learners from different schools gather to access transport.
According to police, fights involving learners have been occurring at the site, prompting an intervention involving the Meyerton Operational Commander, Social Crime Prevention Coordinator and Siyabangena.
Meyerton SAPS Communication Officer Cst Nompumelelo Zazini told Walkerville & Savanna City Times: “The awareness campaign was aimed at addressing safety concerns at the scholar transport point, where learners from different schools gather and where fights have been reported.”
Learners at the site were addressed about school safety and searched as part of the operation.
The initiative later shifted its focus to road safety, with Meyerton SAPS joining Midvaal Traffic for an awareness campaign along Springbok Road.
Motorists and community members were educated about road safety, traffic infringement notices and crime-prevention measures.
“The campaign focused on improving awareness among motorists, pedestrians and learners about the risks they face on the road and the steps they can take to stay safe,” Cst Zazini said.
The campaign highlighted the dangers of hit-and-run incidents and risks faced by pedestrians, while motorists were warned to remain alert in areas where hijackings may occur.
Police also cautioned drivers against leaving valuable items visible inside vehicles and reminded them to ensure windows and doors are properly secured when vehicles are parked.
“Motorists should avoid leaving valuable goods visible in their vehicles and must make sure that doors and windows are properly secured when parking,” she added.
Gender-based violence and femicide awareness also formed part of the campaign.
A total of 100 safety pamphlets were distributed during the operation as authorities sought to reinforce safer behaviour among learners, motorists and other road users.
