‘Not in our name’: Midvaal men stand against GBV

Male employees from across Midvaal Local Municipality gathered on 23 September 2026 to condemn violence against women following recent killings in Ekurhuleni.

The gathering brought together general workers, senior managers and executive leadership, who pledged to play an active role in addressing gender-based violence under the message “Not in our name”.

Midvaal’s Executive Mayor Ald Peter Teixeira highlighted men’s responsibility in confronting the crisis.

“Ending gender-based violence is not a women’s issue alone, but a responsibility every man must carry,” said Teixeira.

Participants committed themselves to promoting the safety of women within their families, social circles, workplaces and communities.

MMC for Community Services, Cllr Mary-Anne Myburgh, led the programme. Teixeira and Municipal Manager Phumudzo Magodi addressed employees, while Pastor Jan Combrink led the gathering in prayer.

The event focused on involving men at every level of the organisation in efforts to end violence against women.
