Environmental Health Practitioners visited homes, early childhood development (ECD) centres and businesses in Boipatong ahead of World Environmental Health Day on 26 September, raising awareness about pollution and climate change.
According to the Gauteng Department of Health, the Sedibeng community was targeted because it forms part of the Vaal Triangle Airshed Priority Area. Industrial activities, domestic fuel burning and transport emissions contribute to pollution in the area.
Teams planted trees at households and educated residents about simple ways to reduce air pollution and protect their surroundings.
Children were also included through the Health Promoting Crèches programme. During visits to ECD centres, practitioners taught learners about climate change and precautions during hot weather, including wearing appropriate clothing, drinking enough water and avoiding prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Local businesses received information on air pollution and dust suppression management. Discussions focused on how pollution affects human health and the environment, and the importance of taking measures to prevent and reduce it.
Practitioners also collected litter as part of the outreach. The department said the clean-up aimed to reduce waste-related health risks and create safer surroundings for the community.
