Midvaal firefighters bring home medals from Toughest Firefighter Alive SA
Midvaal firefighters have put the municipality on the national stage after securing several podium finishes at the Toughest Firefighter Alive South Africa (TFA-SA) 2026 competition in George, Western Cape.
The competition, held in George, Western Cape, from 1 to 3 October, put participants through demanding challenges designed to test the physical and mental resilience required in firefighting.
Midvaal achieved several podium finishes, with M. Mokgatle and T. Engelbrecht each taking third place overall in their respective age groups, while M. Mommsen secured second place in his age group.
The municipality also impressed in the team categories. The Open Male Team of M. Mokgatle, N. Gouws, J. Moreba and C. Vermeulen finished third overall.
The Male Team Over 40, comprising M. Mommsen, T. Engelbrecht, P.X. Zwane and N. Gouws, claimed second place, while Mommsen added another achievement by taking first place in the Over 50 Team category.
Midvaal Executive Mayor Ald Peter Teixeira congratulated the firefighters, saying their achievements reflected the discipline and commitment they bring to serving residents.
“Our firefighters have once again demonstrated the courage, fitness and professionalism required of those entrusted with protecting our communities. Their performance against some of the country’s best firefighters is an achievement that makes the entire Midvaal community proud,” said Teixeira.
He added that the results went beyond medals and highlighted the readiness and dedication of Midvaal’s emergency personnel.
“The same determination displayed during this competition is what our firefighters bring to emergencies every day. I congratulate every member who represented Midvaal and thank them for flying our municipality’s flag high.”
The Toughest Firefighter Alive competition challenges firefighters across multiple disciplines that mirror the demanding conditions they can encounter while responding to emergencies.
Midvaal Municipality congratulated all its firefighters who participated, describing their performance in George as a proud achievement for the municipality.
