Midvaal Local Municipality celebrated White Cane Day at Lakeside Library last week, raising awareness about the challenges faced by blind and visually impaired residents while promoting access to educational resources.
MMC for Community Services, Cllr Mary-Anne Myburgh, attended the event, which highlighted the importance of accessibility and equal opportunities.
Guest speaker Shirley de Bruijn, a municipal employee of 25 years, shared her experiences of navigating everyday life with and without a white cane. She also highlighted resources available to assist visually impaired individuals.
“Our libraries are equipped with technology that assists blind and visually impaired people to read books,” the municipality stated.
Attendees participated in a practical training session demonstrating how to use the assistive reading technology available at local libraries.
The initiative reinforced the municipality’s commitment to ensuring that residents, regardless of their abilities, can access library services and educational opportunities.
Residents interested in using the technology or attending training sessions are encouraged to contact their nearest Midvaal Library.
