Meyerton High School emerged as the 2026 Sports Against Crime champions after defeating Mountain View 3–1 in the tournament final on 23 October.
The inaugural tournament, hosted at Vanderbijlpark Hoërskool, brought together secondary schools from Evaton, Boipatong, Heidelberg, Midvaal, Meyerton and Vanderbijlpark, with the aim of keeping young people away from crime and social challenges through sport.
Organised by the Department of Social Development’s Social Crime Prevention Unit in partnership with the Department of Education, Department of Community Safety and SAPS, the initiative encouraged learners to embrace teamwork, discipline and positive lifestyles.
Despite the scorching heat, participating schools battled through five groups, showcasing their football skills and determination. As reported by Sedibeng Ster journalist Zacharia Nale, Bonolo Tiroyabone from Social Auxiliary praised the schools and stakeholders for supporting the initiative.
“It is exciting to see these youngsters express their God-given talent playing soccer,” said Tiroyabone. Tiroyabone also acknowledged Social Crime Prevention Manager Nomfundo Kamolane for her contribution to the tournament’s success.
Meyerton High’s 3–1 victory secured the championship, but the event’s greater achievement was bringing young people together through sport while promoting safer communities.
The tournament highlighted how football can create opportunities for young talent while encouraging learners to make positive choices for their futures.
