Financial success earns three-year sustainability crown
For the third consecutive year, Midvaal Local Municipality has been named South Africa’s Most Financially Sustainable Municipality by Ratings Afrika, reinforcing its reputation as one of the country’s best-managed municipalities.
The recognition comes after the municipality recorded 12 consecutive clean audits, adopted R9.56 billion in fully funded budgets over the past five years and remained one of the few municipalities in Gauteng with no debt owed to Eskom or Rand Water.
The municipality said its strong financial position has enabled it to keep tariff increases as low as possible while continuing to invest in service delivery and support vulnerable households. About R210 million in irrecoverable debt has also been written off for qualifying residents experiencing financial hardship.
“Sound finances aren’t just numbers on a page; they’re what make excellent service delivery possible,” the municipality said.
The latest achievement adds to more than 40 awards and accolades earned by the municipality and comes as Midvaal continues to position itself as a benchmark for good governance, arguing that responsible financial management remains key to maintaining infrastructure, improving services and driving long-term development.
This version leads with the actual news, explains why it matters to residents, and avoids repeating the same financial achievements throughout the story. It also reads more like a front-page municipal governance story than a press release.
