Meyerton SAPS hosts festive season flash compliance campaign
Meyerton SAPS, through its Flash Unit and Social Crime Prevention, in collaboration with the SAPS Provincial Office, conducted a Festive Season Compliance Campaign on Wednesday, aimed at addressing contributing factors to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and alcohol-related crime.
The operation focused on engaging tavern owners and second-hand goods dealers ahead of the festive period, a time when many residents leave their homes unattended. This often leads to increased burglaries, with stolen goods commonly sold to second-hand dealers and scrap yards. Strengthening compliance within these sectors remains a key priority.
Sgt Xazi from the Provincial Office addressed issues relating to illegal taverns, drug-related activities and the importance of community-police partnerships in promoting safety. Captain Tsotetsi, Acting Sector Manager for Sector 1 Sicelo, highlighted prevalent alcohol-related crimes within the area and urged business owners to operate responsibly.
Warrant Officer Van Vuuren educated attendees on firearm legislation, emphasizing the dangers of carrying a firearm under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and warned that misuse-such as discharging a firearm in prohibited areas-can result in the loss of a firearm licence.
Second-Hand Goods and Liquor Officer Sgt Kuni briefed the group on the requirements for trading licences and permits under the Liquor Act. He encouraged non-compliant shebeen owners to seek assistance and referrals to relevant departments to ensure lawful operation.
A total of 100 pamphlets were distributed during the campaign.
