Midvaal swoops on ‘expired food’ sellers and non-compliant shops
On Wednesday, 16 August, Midvaal Local Municipality’s MMc for Development Planning, Mokete Motsamai, led the Law Enforcement Unit joined by Meyerton SAPS, Crime Prevention Wardens and Siyabangena Patrollers when they conducted an inspection blitz in shops in Daleside, Janteen and Sicelo.
“I have noted with great concern the health and safety hazard by non-compliant local spaza shops, which is a potential danger to human health. As usual, not only do these shops keep their shelves stocked with expired food items that may seem affordable to our people but in most cases, the shop owners live (sleep, bath, etc) in their shops, which makes the shops unhygienic,” said Motsamai.
He added: “We are committed to continue conducting these law enforcement operations, especially where the health and safety of our people is concerned. We also urge our people to be extra careful and check the foodstuff items they buy. All the confiscated items were destroyed.”
