SARU confirms Rugby World Cup trophy is safe after robbery
The South African Rugby Union confirmed that all the major trophies were safe following a break-in at their offices on Monday night.
Security camera footage shows two men rummaging through desks of the ground floor units of the business complex at Plattekloof, Cape Town, where SARU’s offices are located. However, a SARU spokesman confirmed that all the replica trophies – including the recent fourth William Web Ellis Cup – are stored in a safe on the upper levels.
These levels were not accessed by the opportunists. Unconfirmed reports on social media claim that laptops, alcohol and several signed rugby jerseys were among the items stolen, though a police investigation is still underway.
