Meyerton SAPS puts senior citizens safety and well-being first in Sicelo
On 14 May, Team Meyerton visited the Elderly Organisation in Ward 8, Extension 4, Sicelo, as part of a gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) awareness campaign.
The Community Brigades engaged with the elderly, educating them about GBVF and reminding them that they are a vulnerable group with rights. The team encouraged them to report any form of abuse or harassment. They were also informed about the process of applying for protection orders, especially in cases where their children are misusing their social grants or forcing them to care for grandchildren under difficult circumstances.
Concerns were also raised around child neglect, particularly where parents leave children unattended to go drinking. The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit highlighted the various forms of abuse – including sexual, financial, physical and economic abuse.
Meyerton SAPS remains committed to protecting vulnerable groups and continues to prioritise the safety and well-being of senior citizens.
