Meyerton man dies in deadly shack fire
A devastating shack fire in Sicelo, Meyerton has claimed the life of Thokozani Robert Miya, believed to be between 30 and 40 years old.
According to police, a neighbour heard someone shouting and saw light flickering from Miya’s shack. He rushed outside and discovered the shack engulfed in flames. Other community members quickly responded, using a hosepipe in an attempt to extinguish the fire.
Once the blaze was put out, Miya was sadly found burned to death inside. Emergency services were called to the scene and the deceased’s body was taken to the Sebokeng Mortuary. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.
Meyerton SAPS communication officer, Constable Nompumelelo Zazini has issued a stern warning to residents as winter sets in.
Cst Zazini, said: “We want to sensitise the community to be careful when using anything that involves fire. There are many ways to keep warm in winter, but people must be vigilant when using candles and braziers. Please make sure the imbawula is never left burning inside shacks or homes overnight.”
Meyerton’s acting station commander, Lt/Col Johan Der Winnaar, confirmed that a case has been opened and investigations are ongoing.
