Three wanted suspects were fatally wounded in a shootout with the South African Police Services (SAPS) in De Deur on Wednesday, 8 April, following a coordinated operation by specialised law enforcement units.
Hawks released a statement, highlighting that members of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation units from the Vaal and Germiston, working alongside other specialised teams, acted on intelligence regarding the suspects’ whereabouts. The individuals were wanted in connection with cases of police murder and attempted murder in the Johannesburg Central policing precinct.
Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Granville Meyer, confirmed the incident: “ Upon their arrival at the said address, the suspects started to shoot at the police members. The police members then returned fire and fatally wounded the suspects.”
Meyer said one revolver with ammunition and two(2) pistols with ammunition were found on the scene. “Two (2) of the firearms serial numbers were filed off,” he added.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
