Sebokeng youth dial into new opportunities

Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela arrived at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports and Recreation Centre in Sebokeng Zone 14, on Monday for the symbolic handover of 25 containers aimed at creating opportunities for young people in the cellphone repair sector.

The initiative, implemented by the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&R SETA), seeks to equip young South Africans with opportunities to earn an income while contributing to the growth of township economies.

The containers are intended to provide dedicated spaces from which beneficiaries can offer cellphone repair services, helping them turn practical skills into sustainable business opportunities within their own communities. The programme forms part of broader efforts to address youth unemployment by supporting entrepreneurship and encouraging young people to participate in economic activity closer to home.

Through the initiative, beneficiaries will have an opportunity to build their own businesses while providing an accessible service to residents who would otherwise have to travel elsewhere for cellphone repairs. The handover also highlights the role skills development can play beyond traditional employment, particularly in communities where young people continue to face limited job opportunities.

By investing in small businesses and practical skills, the W&R SETA initiative aims to help young entrepreneurs establish themselves in the local market and contribute towards revitalising the township economy. Manamela’s visit to Sebokeng places the spotlight on the potential of community-based enterprises to create livelihoods, develop young entrepreneurs and ensure that more South Africans benefit from economic opportunities within their communities.
