Illegal dumping threatens motorists as waste encroaches on R59

September 10, 2026

A growing illegal dumping site on the border of Emfuleni and Midvaal has escalated from an environmental concern into a potential road safety hazard, with waste now encroaching on the R59.

The deteriorating conditions prompted Emfuleni Mayor Mako, Midvaal Executive Mayor Alderman Peter Teixeira and Gauteng MEC Botha to conduct an oversight visit to the affected area.

During the visit, officials assessed the extent of the dumping and its impact on the busy route, surrounding communities and the environment.

The accumulation of waste has reached a critical stage, raising concerns that motorists could increasingly be exposed to debris and other hazards if the dumping continues unchecked.

The location of the site along the municipal boundary also highlights the need for a coordinated response, as tackling the problem will require cooperation between Emfuleni, Midvaal and the Gauteng provincial government.

Officials stressed that illegal dumping could not be allowed to become normalised and called for stronger enforcement and decisive intervention.

Beyond the immediate threat to road users, uncontrolled dumping can create health and environmental problems for nearby communities, particularly when waste accumulates in open spaces and close to important infrastructure.

The joint visit signals an effort by the different spheres of government to confront a problem that extends beyond municipal boundaries.

Attention will now turn to what practical measures follow the oversight visit, including the removal of the accumulated waste, measures to prevent further dumping and enforcement against those responsible.

Residents and businesses also have a role to play by using authorised waste disposal facilities and reporting illegal dumping.

With waste already affecting an important transport route, authorities face pressure to ensure the intervention moves beyond an inspection and results in sustained action to restore and protect the area.
