Lakeside Library wins national award for innovation in library services

Technological advancements and innovative learning spaces have earned Lakeside Library national recognition at the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) Conference, where it received the Public/Community Library of the Year Award.

The conference, held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 6 – 9October, brought together library and information professionals from across South Africa to discuss developments, innovations and best practices in the sector.

Lakeside Library received the award in recognition of its technological innovations and initiatives that could be adopted by other public libraries.

Midvaal Executive Mayor Alderman Peter Teixeira’s office highlighted the significance of the achievement, describing it as recognition of the municipality’s efforts to modernise library services.

“celebrates the department’s commitment to innovation, community development, and the transformation of library services to meet the evolving needs of the public,” said Teixeira.

Among the initiatives highlighted were the introduction of a gaming room, a makerspace and other technology-driven facilities designed to promote creativity, digital literacy, interactive learning and community participation.

The facilities provide library users with opportunities to develop practical skills, explore technology and participate in educational activities beyond traditional reading and book-lending services.

As part of the award, Lakeside Library will receive tablets and a smart screen sponsored by Ndende to further support its technology-driven learning initiatives.

The four-day conference featured presentations, discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions focused on developments and best practices within the library and information services sector.

The recognition highlights Midvaal Libraries’ efforts to adapt public library services to changing educational and technological needs.

The award also places Lakeside Library among public institutions recognised for introducing innovative approaches to learning and community participation.

For Midvaal Libraries, the achievement marks a milestone in its efforts to expand access to technology and create additional educational opportunities for residents.
