Blocked drains targeted in Midvaal flood-prevention drive

Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira inspected Midvaal’s stormwater infrastructure on Tuesday, September 8, as municipal teams prepared drainage systems for the rainy season.

The municipality said workers were clearing and maintaining the infrastructure to prevent blockages that could restrict the flow of rainwater and contribute to localised flooding.

“This morning, we conducted oversight visits to assess the condition of our stormwater infrastructure across our areas,” Teixeira said.

“Our teams are proactively cleaning and maintaining the infrastructure to prevent blockages that could cause flooding during the rainy season.”

The municipality did not specify which areas were inspected, how many stormwater systems require attention or when the maintenance work is expected to be completed.

Poorly maintained or obstructed drainage systems can cause water to accumulate on roads and around properties during heavy rainfall.

Residents were urged to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid dumping rubbish in drains and waterways, as waste can obstruct stormwater systems.

The municipality has not indicated whether any flood-prone areas have been prioritised as part of the programme.
