Evaton bishop arrested for alleged rape of 14-year-old girl
Evaton and surrounding communities have been left in shock following the arrest of a well-known local bishop accused of raping a 14-year-old girl.
The incident has sparked outrage, as the religious leader was widely trusted in the area.
Speaking to Walkerville and Savanna City Times, Constable Thulisile Msibi, confirmed that a case was opened at the Evaton police station on 23 February. The matter was subsequently transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit for further investigation.
“On Sunday, 2 March, a male suspect, aged between 30 and 35, was arrested in connection with the allegations. He is expected to appear in the Sebokeng Magistrate’s Court soon,” said Msibi.
Colonel Gulashe, the Evaton Police Station Commander, strongly condemned the incident, urging residents to report any form of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) by contacting 08600 10111.
This case is among several reported in recent years involving religious leaders accused of rape. Many cases remain unreported, while others are still before the courts, raising concerns about the safety of vulnerable individuals in faith-based spaces.
Several notable cases have been reported in recent years. These cases highlight the severity and prevalence of such offenses within religious institutions in South Africa:
Pastor Bafomba Willy Emeka: In September 2021, Emeka was sentenced to 37 years in prison for multiple counts of rape and sexual assault involving five members of his congregation between 2015 and 2018.
Shepherd Bushiri: In March 2021, South African police charged Bushiri with 16 counts of rape related to eight different victims.
Authorities continue to encourage victims and witnesses to come forward to ensure justice is served.
