Smash puts SA women’s boxing on the world stage in WBC Title clash
On 4 April, Walkerville’s Smangele ‘Smash’ Hadebe made history when she stepped into the ring against Gabriel ‘Bonita’ Sanchez at the Olympic Stadium in Mexico for the WBC Silver Title.
The fight was broadcast to audiences across the globe – marking the first time a female boxer from South Africa competed at this level. Smash came out strong from the start, landing a solid left jab that broke Sanchez’s nose. Sanchez returned even more aggressive in the second round and despite a powerful performance from Smash, the judges handed her a loss by unanimous decision.
Still, Smash endured all ten rounds without being knocked out. Smash’s coach, Colleen McAusland, told Walkerville and Savanna City Times: “In round four, Sanchez became a dirty fighter- hitting Smash behind the head multiple times and pushing her down with her elbow. She stopped boxing and turned into a dirty brawler.”
McAusland also highlighted the challenges faced by South African fighters: “It’s unfair for our top champions and world-title prospects. In South Africa, they don’t get many opportunities to fight. Meanwhile, the Mexicans are fighting nearly every month thanks to their many tournaments. That gives them a big advantage. Still, we are incredibly proud of Smash – she represented South Africa with heart.”
She also thanked those who made the historic fight possible: “We’re very grateful to Discover Sport for broadcasting the fight worldwide for the first time in history. Their support has meant everything to us and everyone who stood behind Smash.”
