Midvaal, De Deur SAPS and community walk against GBV
The Social Development Section of Midvaal Local Municipality, together with Meyerton SAPS and the Department of Community Safety, hosted a major community mobilisation event in Sicelo on Monday as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) campaign.
Led by MMC for Community Services Cllr Mary-Anne Myburgh, the event highlighted this year’s national theme: “Addressing the root causes of GBVF, promoting positive masculinity, promoting gender equity and creating economic opportunities for women and children.” The theme guided the programme and strengthened the collective message of unity, safety and accountability across the community.
The mobilisation began at White House in Sicelo, where residents gathered before participating in an awareness walk through the neighbourhood. The walk aimed to raise visibility around GBVF and reinforce the urgent need for safer homes and communities.
As part of the day’s activities, Cllr Myburgh, councillors, SAPS representatives and community members signed the “Midvaal Stand Against GBVF” pledge. The commitment calls on residents to actively oppose all forms of gender-based violence and to promote a culture of respect, protection and dignity.
Midvaal Local Municipality expressed appreciation to all residents, partners, and stakeholders who took part, noting that continued collaboration is essential in sustaining the fight against GBVF beyond the campaign period.
