Residents engage on review of R59 Corridor Development Plan

Residents of Garthdale and Pendale had an opportunity to contribute to the review of the R59 Corridor Strategic Development Plan during stakeholder engagement sessions held on Saturday.

The sessions were led by the MMC for Development and Planning, Cllr Thembi Maduna, together with the Development and Planning team, while Plan Associates delivered presentations outlining the review process and key considerations for the corridor.

The engagements form part of a broader public participation process aimed at ensuring that communities affected by future development along the R59 corridor have an opportunity to provide input.

Midvaal Executive Mayor Ald Peter Teixeira said meaningful public participation remained an important part of planning for the municipality’s future growth.

“The R59 corridor plays an important role in Midvaal’s long-term growth and development. As we review this strategic plan, it is essential that the voices of our residents and stakeholders form part of the process. We want to ensure that future development is well planned, sustainable and creates opportunities while protecting the interests and character of the communities we serve,” said Teixeira.

Residents and other interested parties who were unable to attend the sessions can still submit written comments to planning@midvaal.gov.za before 31 August 2026.

Further stakeholder engagement sessions are scheduled to take place on 19 and 22 August 2026, providing additional opportunities for residents to participate in the review process.

Teixeira encouraged communities to make use of the remaining opportunities to have their say.

“Public participation helps us make better and more informed planning decisions. I encourage residents to attend the upcoming sessions or submit their comments before the closing date so that we can shape the future of this important development corridor together,” he added.
