Armed suspect hijacks truck driver on R59 in Meyerton

A truck driver was hijacked on the R59 freeway near the Henley Drive off-ramp in Henley on Klip, Meyerton, on Thursday morning, 8 May.

According to information received, the 40-year-old driver was travelling along the R59 at about 09:20 when occupants of a white Dyna truck and later a silver Hyundai i20 without registration plates hooted at him, allegedly indicating that there was something wrong with the back of his truck.

The driver eventually stopped on the side of the freeway to inspect the vehicle. While checking, he was approached by an unknown African male who allegedly threatened him with a firearm that was tucked into his waist.

The suspect then forced the driver into a white sedan and drove off with him, leaving the truck behind at the scene.

Police said the complainant was later dropped off in Primrose, where he received assistance before being taken to Brackendowns Police Station. The case was later transferred to Meyerton SAPS as the incident occurred within the Henley on Klip policing area.

During further investigation, it was discovered that only the trailer had been stolen, while the truck head was recovered through a tracking company and returned to the company depot.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Meyerton SAPS communications officer Constable Nompumelelo Zazini confirmed that a truck hijacking case has been opened for investigation.
