Midvaal residents urged to conserve water as Rand Water imposes 25% restrictions

Rand Water has introduced a 25% bulk water supply restriction, prompting Midvaal Local Municipality to urge residents to conserve water. Walkerville and surrounding communities are advised to prepare for possible low pressure and intermittent supply interruptions.

November 2, 2026

Midvaal residents, including those in Walkerville and surrounding areas, have been urged to use water sparingly after Rand Water introduced restrictions on bulk water supply because of low reservoir levels and increased demand. In a public notice issued on Sunday, 1 November, Midvaal Local Municipality confirmed that Rand Water had implemented a 25% restriction on municipal bulk water supply meters with immediate effect.

The municipality said the restrictions were introduced amid an El Niño-related heatwave, which has contributed to higher water consumption across Gauteng. Rand Water also indicated that water demand in the province was well above the available design capacity of the bulk water supply infrastructure.

The reduced supply is expected to affect water pressure across the municipality, particularly during peak consumption periods. Some areas, including Klipwater and Henley on Klip, are already experiencing low water pressure and intermittent supply interruptions.

Although water supply will continue, residents may experience reduced pressure and temporary interruptions while the restrictions remain in place. Midvaal has asked households, businesses, industries and institutions to use water responsibly and introduce water-saving measures to help ease pressure on the regional supply system. Residents experiencing no water or prolonged interruptions are encouraged to report these through the municipality’s official reporting channels so that the necessary intervention can be arranged.

The municipality said water tankers would be deployed to affected areas where necessary. Information about tanker locations and distribution schedules will be shared through its official communication platforms. Midvaal added that it would continue monitoring the situation in collaboration with Rand Water and other stakeholders, with further updates to be communicated as more information becomes available.

Residents can contact Midvaal Local Municipality on 087 106 2471 for general enquiries or 016 360 7500 for emergencies. Complaints can also be emailed to complaints@midvaal.gov.za.
