Church and police unite for a safer Meyerton
Faith met action on 13 July as the Meyerton Police teamed up with St Mary Catholic Church in Sicelo to address crime and social issues through unity and purpose.
The community-focused visit, led by Social Crime Prevention Coordinator Constable Nompumelelo Zazini and warmly received by Father John Thembe, aimed to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the faith community.
Speaking to congregants, Constable Zazini highlighted the crucial role of churches in offering support, hope and protection. She urged the church to take an active stand against social ills such as gender-based violence and femicide issues often hidden in silence and fear. She encouraged women to speak out and seek help, explaining the process of applying for protection orders. “Churches must help break the silence and stand with those in need,” she said.
Zazini also invited young people to join the Youth Desk Crime Prevention programme and called on both men and women to become Safety Promoters – community members who work closely with SAPS to ensure safer streets and stronger support systems.
Meyerton station commander, Senzangakhona Christopher Mohale, reaffirmed his station’s commitment to safeguarding every resident, emphasizing that lasting change comes through collaboration.
“This is about building stronger, safer communities together,” said Constable Zazini.
