Walkerville’s powerhouse boxers nominated for GSport Awards
Walkerville’s boxing scene is making waves on the national stage as three of its stars step into the spotlight at this year’s GSport Awards.
African Woman in Sport finalist Monica Mkandla, Special Recognition nominee Bonita van Jaarsveldt, and Overall Woman in Sport finalist Colleen McAusland are all vying for honours that celebrate excellence in women’s sport across Africa.
Now in its 20th edition, the GSport Awards recognise athletes, coaches, administrators, and media professionals whose achievements inspire progress and equality in sport.
For Mkandla, her nomination marks another milestone in a career defined by resilience and dominance. The reigning Abu champion has become a symbol of determination, inspiring young women to take up boxing and believe in their potential.
Van Jaarsveldt, the national lightweight champion, earned her nomination through consistent performances and a fearless approach to competition.
McAusland, who manages 18 professional boxers and oversees eight current title belts, credits teamwork for their collective success: “We are building more than champions in the ring. We are building role models who inspire the next generation to dream bigger and work harder.”
Her track record includes producing champions across weight divisions and guiding fighters like Smash, Monica Mkandla and Bonita van Jaarsveldt to national and continental success.
The nominations of these three boxing figures signal a rising tide for women in sport and highlight Walkerville’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for champions.
