Meyerton farmer to take South African spinach to Rome for Global Food Security Forum

In an inspiring story of growth and empowerment, local farmer Tintswalo Makhubele, affectionately known as “Maspinach,” is set to represent South Africa at the United Nations Food Security Conference in Rome on 10 October 10. Her journey from the spinach fields of Meyerton to the global stage is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the power of community-driven solutions to combat food insecurity.

Maspinach, a proud member of the Imvuselelo Bakery and Food Distribution, a Non-Profit Organisation funded by the Gauteng Department of Social Development, will share her remarkable story of transforming lives through sustainable food production. Her initiative, which began as a humble spinach-growing project, has flourished into a community powerhouse that empowers women and youth to create sustainable livelihoods through backyard food gardens.

“We train women on how to plant and maintain their gardens, encouraging them to share seedlings to minimize costs,” Maspinach explained. Her efforts have not only alleviated poverty but also created a ripple effect, providing skills and resources to over 200 young people in the area.

Maspinach’s spinach is now a staple for street vendors and the Johannesburg market, and her efforts to teach youth how to grow, market, and sell vegetables have provided critical job creation opportunities. “Each time our trainees leave, they take spinach with them to share with their families,” she proudly shared.

The UN Food Security Conference will feature Maspinach as part of its official program, where she will discuss innovative approaches to food security and community empowerment on a global scale. Supported by the Gauteng Department of Social Development, her project has become a beacon of hope for communities struggling with hunger and unemployment.
