Youth Day Walk a big hit as walkers conquer Platberg Heights!

On 16 June, Helen and Jeremy Glynn hosted the Walkerville Walk in celebration of Youth Day, leading over 200 participants to the summit of Gauteng’s second-highest natural peak Platberg Heights. It was a resounding success!

From the start, the event was generously supported by EXPOL Security, whose large team arrived early to ensure safety and support. The ever-helpful Beverley Hardaker welcomed walkers at the gate with sweets and smiles. At registration, BESA Leadership Academy volunteers greeted attendees warmly, with Caroline Gosling on hand to offer assistance and guidance.

With coffee, tea and bacon-and-egg rolls on offer, the crowd gathered in anticipation. After a short wait for latecomers, Midvaal MMC Chantal Gomes officially launched the walk by cutting the ribbon and the crowd took to the gravel roads.

Organiser Helen Glynn, told SCT: “There’s something magical about seeing so many people and pets walking together for a cause, reaching new heights literally. We wanted to show people what’s right on their doorstep. Excited dogs trotted alongside their owners and smiles were seen at every turn. About 2 km into the route, Herbal Pet handed out treats to the pups while walkers received bottled water, courtesy of Bene Natural Spring Water.”

As the ascent up Platberg grew steeper, the group began to spread out. The hills tested everyone’s endurance, but breathtaking views offered moments to pause, admire, and recharge.

“This is by far our most challenging route ye but it also offers the most rewarding views. You can see from Vereeniging to Randfontein,”noted co-organiser Jeremy Glynn.

At the summit, many took selfies with the South African flag, a badge of honour proving they had made it to the top. The descent was led by Gary Tuchmann from Tary Electronics, offering more stunning scenery along the way. At the final water stop, first aiders and the fire marshal welcomed the leading group, which included enthusiastic children from TLC.

Fresh water and sweet oranges, sponsored by Walkerville Spar, were handed out to refresh tired hikers. Later, Eduard Tuchmann, Gary’s son, delighted walkers with an impromptu magic show that captivated both adults and kids. Just before reaching the finish line, walkers received bananas from RE/MAX Finest Walkerville.

Well-known local estate agent Bella Russell also handed out treats to walkers heading to their vehicles. Gratitude poured in for Helen and Jeremy Glynn for organising such a meaningful and memorable day.

The following individuals and organisations were warmly thanked by the organisers:

Bene Natural Spring Water; RE/MAX Finest Walkerville; EXPOL Security; BESA Leadership Academy; The Herbal Pet; Walkerville Spar; Urban Wave; Jeremy Glynn Photography; Walkerville Hardware and one generous anonymous donor.
