Savanna City FA climbs table amid struggles

Savanna City Football Academy continues to make steady progress in the Midvaal Local Football Association (LFA), climbing to third place on the league table following this past weekend’s fixtures.

The Academy’s senior division has also secured a spot among the top four qualifiers for the Mayoral Cup, reflecting consistent performance across its structures.

Savanna City Football Academy runs multiple divisions, including junior teams from under-9 to under-17, all focused on developing young talent through structured football development.

However, the club’s masters division, consisting of players over 35, currently competes in the Sedibeng League due to the absence of a dedicated masters league within Midvaal. With no sponsorship support, the team is forced to travel long distances to places such as Zamdela and Sharpeville for fixtures, placing financial strain on the players.

Coach Simon Masilela said the lack of resources continues to affect the Academy’s growth.

“We are doing our best with very limited resources, and it becomes difficult to manage all our divisions effectively,”said Masilela.

A major challenge remains infrastructure, with close to 200 players sharing a single small sports field in Savanna City.

The coach said improved facilities would make a significant difference in development.

“If we could have additional fields, it would help us accommodate all our players and improve the quality of training,” Masilela added.

Beyond the challenges, the Academy remains committed to using sport as a tool for development, keeping young people engaged and away from crime and substance abuse while building discipline and opportunity through football.

Despite constraints in funding, equipment, and facilities, Savanna City Football Academy continues to grow as a vital sporting structure in the community.
