Vereeniging FCS sparks child protection awareness at Sicelo Primary
Sicelo Primary School came alive on 26 May, as learners took part in a vibrant joint Child Protection Month and Africa Day programme , blending cultural celebration with critical safety education.
The day opened with the dignified hosting of the South African and African Union flags, setting the tone for a programme filled with colour, culture, and learning. Learners then brought Africa to life through energetic performances, traditional dress, food displays, and dances representing different African countries.
The Vereeniging Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit led impactful awareness sessions aimed at equipping learners with vital life skills. Topics included rights and responsibilities, rape prevention, bullying, substance abuse, cybercrime, and the dangers linked to initiation schools.
Midvaal Fire Services added a practical safety element to the day, demonstrating the risks of veld fires, candles, and gas stoves, helping learners understand everyday hazards in their homes and communities.
The programme brought together multiple stakeholders, including Meyerton Social Crime, Meyerton Sector Managers, FCS, Midvaal Fire Services, wardens and peace officers, Siyabangena, the Youth Desk, the School Governing Body, school management, and learners. A total of 820 learners were reached.
Meyerton SAPS Communication Officer Cst Nompumelelo Zazini said: “The learners were taught about their safety.”
The event successfully combined education, culture, and community engagement, leaving learners inspired and more aware of both their rights and responsibilities.
