Savanna City bows out on penalties
Savanna Football Academy’s Mayoral Cup journey came to an end this past weekend after a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Meyerton Future Holders in the semi-finals.
The match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes before Meyerton Future Holders secured a 9-8 victory in the shootout.
Savanna City faced an uphill battle from the fifth minute when Ntokozo Ndlovu was sent off, leaving the team to play with 10 men for almost the entire match. Despite the setback, the team showed resilience and determination, battling hard to keep the scores level until the final whistle.
Coach Simon Masilela praised his players for their commitment and fighting spirit despite the difficult circumstances.
“I am proud of the boys for the fighting spirit they showed. Playing with 10 men from the fifth minute made the game very difficult, but they never gave up and managed to take the match all the way to penalties. Unfortunately, penalties can go either way, and this time it was not our day. We will learn from this experience and come back stronger,” said Masilela.
Although disappointed by the result, Savanna Football Academy can take pride in their performance and the character they displayed throughout the contest.
The defeat brings an end to Savanna City’s Mayoral Cup campaign, but the team’s spirited display provides a strong foundation as they look ahead to future competitions.
