Police crack down on counterfeit goods in Sedibeng district
Gauteng police have intensified their efforts to combat the sale and distribution of counterfeit and illicit goods, with a recent operation in the Sedibeng District resulting in the seizure of thousands of rands worth of illegal merchandise.
On Wednesday, 1 July, members of the SAPS Gauteng Provincial Counterfeit Unit, working alongside brand protection experts, conducted a coordinated operation in De Deur and Evaton.
The joint task team inspected 15 shops during the operation, targeting businesses suspected of selling counterfeit and illicit products. Officers confiscated a wide range of illegal goods, including counterfeit clothing, fashion accessories, and consumable products.
The Sedibeng operation formed part of a broader provincial crackdown on counterfeit, contraband, and illicit goods aimed at protecting consumers, legitimate businesses, and the economy from the harmful effects of illegal trade.
According to SAPS, the operation also supports ongoing efforts to dismantle illicit supply chains operating across Gauteng. Police are working closely with industry stakeholders and brand protection specialists to identify those responsible for manufacturing, distributing, and selling counterfeit goods.
The Sedibeng operation was one of two major enforcement actions carried out by the Provincial Counterfeit Unit during the week, with the combined value of goods seized in the Sedibeng and Ekurhuleni operations estimated at R296 181.
Gauteng police have reaffirmed their commitment to continuing these targeted operations, warning that individuals involved in the counterfeit goods trade will face arrest and prosecution.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to remain vigilant when purchasing branded products and to report suspected counterfeit or illicit goods to the South African Police Service.
Police say these operations form part of their broader strategy to combat organised crime, strengthen community safety, and protect consumers from potentially unsafe counterfeit products.
