Road repair campaign sees over 1,900 potholes fixed
Midvaal Local Municipality repaired more than 1,900 potholes during June as part of its ongoing War on Potholes campaign, while also advancing key road rehabilitation projects across the municipality.
According to Midvaal Executive Mayor Ald Peter Teixeira , repair teams fixed potholes covering a combined area of 781.71 square metres, achieving an average pothole closure rate of 83%.
“Our teams continue to make steady progress in improving road infrastructure through the War on Potholes campaign. During June alone, we repaired more than 1,900 potholes while maintaining an average weekly closure rate of 83%,”Texeria said.
In addition to pothole repairs, gravel road maintenance teams attended to 25 roads, re-gravelling more than 21 kilometres of roadway to improve accessibility and driving conditions for residents.
Municipal teams also carried out road safety improvements by repainting stop signs, pedestrian crossings and speed humps, while restoring rusted road infrastructure. Other service delivery teams assisted with tree trimming, weed control, clearing illegal dumping sites and repairing streetlights to improve visibility and road safety.
The municipality said rehabilitation work on Boundary Road is now 85% complete following extensive road failures that compromised sections of the roadway.
Construction is also progressing on Cornie Pypers Road in Golf Park, where investigations revealed unstable, waterlogged ground conditions. Engineers found that the existing asphalt surface had been built directly on a clay subgrade with little to no supporting pavement layers.
“To address these challenges, dump rock has been installed to create a stable working platform and improve drainage, while construction of the new road layers is now underway,” he added
The municipality added that additional funding will be redirected to the Cornie Pypers Road project to accommodate unforeseen site conditions and the expanded scope of work.
Midvaal said the War on Potholes campaign will continue as part of its efforts to improve road infrastructure and ensure residents have access to safer and more reliable roads.
