T-Dope puts community at the heart of his music
Lakeside Estate’s Thabang Makhetha, better known as T-Dope, is using music to tell authentic stories from his community while inspiring young people to believe in their potential.
The 27-year-old rapper says growing up in Lakeside Estate shaped both his music and his purpose. What started as writing lyrics in his room and recording on his phone has developed into a promising career built on storytelling and determination.
“My music is about staying true to yourself, working hard and never allowing your environment to define your future. I want people to feel motivated, understood and proud of where they come from when they listen to my music,” T-Dope told Walkerville & Savanna City Times
His breakthrough came with the release of his debut single, Ntseke Di Bala, which earned strong support from the local community. Performing in front of audiences who knew his lyrics remains one of the milestones he treasures most.
Despite facing challenges such as limited resources, gaining recognition and funding his music independently, T-Dope has remained focused on his dream. He believes consistency and self-belief have been key to overcoming obstacles.
Currently, the rapper is working on his upcoming For My People EP, while also preparing new collaborations and live performances as he aims to expand his reach during 2026.
T-Dope encouraged aspiring artists to remain authentic and committed to their craft.
“Don’t chase trends. Create your own sound, learn the business side of music and keep showing up. You don’t need everything to start – you just need to start,” he added.
