Older persons games promote active ageing in Meyerton

Older residents gathered at Meyerton Sicelo Hall on Monday, 17 August, for the Older Persons Games, an initiative aimed at promoting active ageing, healthy lifestyles and social interaction among senior citizens.

The programme brought participants together for a range of activities, including walking, ball games and team-based events, giving older persons an opportunity to remain physically active while enjoying a day of friendship and community spirit.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, highlighted the importance of creating opportunities that encourage older residents to remain active and connected to their communities.

“Active ageing is about ensuring that our older persons remain healthy, connected and actively involved in their communities. Initiatives such as the Older Persons Games provide an important platform for our senior citizens to stay physically active, build friendships and enjoy a sense of belonging,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.

She added that the enthusiasm displayed by participants demonstrated that growing older should not mean withdrawing from an active lifestyle.

“Seeing our older persons participating with such enthusiasm here in Meyerton is a reminder that age should never be a barrier to living an active and fulfilling life,” she said.

Beyond physical exercise, the games provided an opportunity for participants to socialise, work together and strengthen relationships within their communities.

The event also placed the spotlight on the importance of programmes that support the wellbeing and quality of life of older persons, while encouraging them to remain active members of society.

The Older Persons Games form part of efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, friendship and community spirit among senior citizens across Gauteng.
