Residents get a say on future of R59 Corridor
Residents and other affected stakeholders will have an opportunity this week to influence how future development along the R59 Corridor is planned, as Midvaal Local Municipality and the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development continue reviewing the corridor’s Strategic Development Plan and Urban Design Framework.
A public engagement session will be held at Meyerton Town Hall on Wednesday, August 19, from 16:00 to 18:00, followed by another session at Meyerton Library on Saturday, August 22.
The review is aimed at updating the long-term development framework for one of Midvaal’s most important growth corridors and giving communities, businesses, landowners and other interested parties a chance to comment before the plan is finalised.
The R59 Corridor stretches through several key development areas in Midvaal. Existing planning documents identify development nodes around Waterval in the north, Daleside and Highbury in the central section, and Meyerton and Sicelo in the south.
The municipality’s planning framework seeks to guide where residential, industrial, commercial and other developments should be concentrated while also improving movement between communities and access to the R59.
Part of the long-term vision is to increase the intensity of development along the corridor, improve east-west links to the freeway and support better use of public transport. Meyerton and its surrounding areas are identified as one of the major development nodes where future investment could be concentrated.
Midvaal and the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development began the current review process earlier this year, with stakeholder workshops held in April to gather initial input from interested and affected parties.
The draft R59 Corridor Strategic Development Plan and Urban Design Framework has since been approved for public comment in terms of the Midvaal Spatial Planning and Land Use Management By-law and the Municipal Systems Act.
Residents who cannot attend the public sessions can still make written submissions to the municipality’s Development and Planning Department or email comments to planning@midvaal.gov.za.
The municipality has given the public until August 31 to submit comments on the draft framework.
The review could have long-term implications for land use, housing, business development, industrial growth, transport and infrastructure along the corridor, making public participation important for communities that may be affected by future development.
Residents are therefore encouraged to use the consultation process to raise concerns, identify local needs and help shape how growth along the R59 is managed in the years ahead.
