Midvaal’s R10m fuel depot upgrade powers efficiency and green goals
In a bid to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs, the Midvaal Local Municipality has invested R10 million in upgrading its fuel depot. This strategic development promises not only financial savings but also showcases a commitment to sustainability and local empowerment.
The upgraded facility now boasts a significantly increased capacity, with diesel storage expanded from 4,800 liters to 50,000 liters, and petrol capacity increased to 25,000 liters. This expansion enables the municipality, which manages over 300 service vehicles, to purchase fuel at wholesale rates, leading to projected savings of up to R3 million per year.
Beyond increased storage, the depot incorporates smart technology to monitor fuel usage in real time, with each transaction linked to specific vehicle and driver data. This innovation is expected to curb fuel misuse, deter theft, and improve fuel management through detailed monitoring.
Additionally, the project aligns with green energy goals by including a solar-powered system to supply energy to the depot. Solar panels atop the canopy store power in batteries, which sustain both the depot and its offices, minimizing environmental impact.

The initiative also reflects Midvaal’s support for local development; two Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) from the area were contracted for security and facility maintenance during the upgrade, employing six local residents.
Midvaal’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Peter Teixeira, emphasized the project as a testament to the municipality’s commitment to prudent spending and operational excellence. “This fuel depot not only strengthens our cost management but exemplifies how we can innovate for efficiency and support the local economy,” he noted.
With its emphasis on efficiency, security, and environmental responsibility, Midvaal’s fuel depot upgrade stands as a model for municipalities aiming to balance fiscal responsibility with sustainable development.
