R49m Savanna City Substation boosts power capacity

Midvaal Local Municipality has unveiled the newly completed R49 million Savanna City Substation to increase electricity capacity and meet growing demand in the area.

The substation was officially unveiled on Tuesday, August 18, with the municipality saying the project was completed on time and within budget.

Midvaal Executive Mayor Ald Peter Teixeira said the investment was necessary to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with development and population growth.

“The Savanna City Substation is an important addition to our electricity infrastructure and will increase capacity to meet the growing demand for electricity in the area,” said Teixeira.

“We continue to make these investments to unlock further developments and ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with that growth.”

The project included the construction of an 88kV control room, 11kV switching rooms, a load control room and infrastructure for the 88/11kV transformers. Construction was carried out according to Eskom standards and specifications.

Beyond improving electricity infrastructure, the project provided an economic boost during construction, creating at least 25 jobs and involving 10 local Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs).

The municipality said the investment forms part of its drive to provide reliable and sustainable electricity services while supporting future development in Midvaal.
