Maduna champions development that benefits local communities

For MMC Thembi Maduna, development is not simply about approving new buildings or attracting investors. It is about creating jobs, supporting local businesses and ensuring communities benefit from the municipality’s growth.

Maduna leads Midvaal’s Development and Planning portfolio, which oversees by-law enforcement, zoning applications and approvals, local economic development, human settlements and tourism.

Her interest in politics grew as she learnt more about government and the role public representatives play in shaping communities.

“It became exciting to know that I could form part of a decision-making body in local government and government in general,” she said.

Maduna believes efficient planning processes can unlock opportunities for women, young entrepreneurs and small businesses. She said cutting unnecessary red tape makes it easier for developers to invest and complete projects.

“If Development and Planning functions properly, we can roll out the red carpet for investors. This creates employment opportunities, helps businesses grow and increases the value of Midvaal,” she said.

However, attracting investment is only one part of the municipality’s approach. Maduna said developers are encouraged to buy locally, employ residents and include small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in their projects.

The municipality also offers training and preparation to help emerging businesses become ready to bid for opportunities.

“It is not only about rolling out the red carpet for developers; it is also about ensuring that local businesses are ready when those investments arrive,” Maduna said.

Interacting with residents and people from different walks of life remains the most rewarding part of her work.

Her message to young women and the youth is simple: “If you are passionate about something, put in the work, study, work hard and remain determined. No matter how difficult it may be, you will get there.”
