SASSA brings essential grant services closer to Boitumelo residents

Residents of Boitumelo in Sebokeng were able to access social grant assistance and other essential services closer to home when SASSA Gauteng hosted a community outreach activation at Trinity Assemblies of God on Tuesday, 29 September 2026.

The activation, which ran from 09:00 to 16:00, brought SASSA officials and other service providers directly into the community, allowing residents to seek help without having to travel to a SASSA office.

Despite the cold weather, community members turned out to engage with officials, ask questions and receive assistance with matters affecting their social grants.

The outreach formed part of SASSA Gauteng’s ongoing programme to make social security services more accessible by taking them directly to communities.

Residents were able to receive assistance with applications for different social grants, including the Child Support Grant and Child Support Grant Top-Up.

Support was also available for grant reviews, queries relating to payment methods and the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant, including residents wanting to check the progress of their applications.

The activation also brought other government departments and stakeholders into one space, giving residents access to information about additional public services.

Banking institutions were among the service providers involved, allowing community members to receive assistance with services such as opening bank accounts and obtaining bank statements.

The initiative was particularly aimed at reducing some of the barriers residents may face when trying to access government services, including transport costs and travelling long distances for assistance.

Walkerville & Savanna City Times previously reported on 29 September that residents attending the Boitumelo activation were encouraged to bring their identity documents and any supporting documents relevant to the services they required.

For Child Support Grant Top-Up applications, residents were advised to bring the required documentation relating to the child’s parents, including death certificates or relevant affidavits where applicable.

The Sebokeng activation also formed part of SASSA’s 20th anniversary activities under the theme “Restoring dignity and transforming lives”.

SASSA Gauteng says the broader outreach campaign will continue reaching communities across the province as the agency works to make social grant information and assistance more accessible and convenient for beneficiaries.

For Boitumelo residents, the activation provided an opportunity to deal directly with officials and obtain assistance within their own community rather than relying solely on conventional SASSA offices.

The initiative forms part of SASSA’s wider commitment to taking services to the people and improving access to social protection for qualifying residents.
