Officials inspect Heidelberg treatment centre during oversight visit

The Mabutho Hlatshwayo Treatment Centre in Heidelberg came under scrutiny on 21 August when Gauteng social development officials conducted an oversight visit to assess services, verify official reports and examine the use of public funds.

The visit was led by Gauteng Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Social Development chairperson Hon Dr Tlou Chokoe, together with Gauteng MEC for Social Development Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

According to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, the inspection was aimed at determining whether information contained in official reports reflected conditions and service delivery at the government facility.

“The aim of the oversight visit was to inspect the government facility, test the accuracy of official reports and ensure that public funds are used effectively to deliver public services,” the legislature said.

The delegation also assessed whether resources allocated to the centre were being used effectively to provide treatment and rehabilitation services to people affected by substance abuse.

Mabutho Hlatshwayo Treatment Centre forms part of government efforts to provide rehabilitation and recovery support while strengthening drug-prevention programmes in communities.

The visit was conducted under the Ke Moja campaign, which promotes drug-free lifestyles and raises awareness about the impact of substance abuse.

Any findings or recommendations arising from the oversight inspection had not yet been made public at the time of publication.
