Students demanding justice for slain college student Leano Mogaladi gathered outside the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court as the man accused of killing him remained behind bars.
Sipho Magagula appeared in court on Monday, 26 October, facing a murder charge following the alleged fatal stabbing of Mogaladi with a pair of scissors. The case was postponed to 3 November to allow the State to verify the accused’s profile and records. The State indicated that it would oppose bail, according to Sedibeng Ster.
Outside court, members of the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) and the South African Students Congress (SASCO) joined students in calling for the accused to be denied bail.
According to Sedibeng Ster journalist Sifiso Jimta,SASCO provincial deputy chairperson Nhlanhla Radebe said the college community was mourning the loss and raised concerns about alleged previous bullying incidents. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu confirmed that a murder case had been opened and investigations were continuing. Sedibeng College also expressed condolences to Mogaladi’s family and those affected by his death. Magagula remains accused of the crime, and the allegations have yet to be tested in court.
