Midvaal intensifies road safety drive to protect learners

Midvaal Local Municipality has stepped up road safety operations aimed at protecting learners and other road users, with recent inspections exposing serious violations in scholar transport.

Highlighting the importance of continued enforcement, Executive Mayor Alderman Peter Teixeira said, “Our Traffic Division has consistently risen to the challenge and, over the years, has pursued innovative approaches to strengthen traffic services and enhance safety on our roads.”

The campaign, conducted for a week at schools in Meyerton including Meyerton High, De Deur Primary and Randvaal Primary, uncovered overloaded vehicles, unroadworthy buses, minibus taxis operating without valid Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs), and drivers without required documentation. Several vehicles were discontinued from service due to mechanical defects.

Authorities also found learners being transported in unsafe conditions, including the use of improvised seating.

Officials say the operations form part of ongoing enforcement and driver education efforts to improve compliance and road safety. Similar campaigns will continue across the municipality to safeguard learners, commuters and all road users.
