Meyerton SAPS marks Human Rights Day with community outreach
Community members, stakeholders and police gathered in Meyerton, on 13 May, for a Human Rights Day and Child Protection Week outreach aimed at empowering vulnerable groups and educating residents on social challenges affecting communities.
The event, hosted with the International Gender Link Organisation, focused on helping victims become survivors through skills development, mentorship and business support programmes.
One beneficiary shared an emotional testimony about how the organisation and its director, Mme Naledi, helped change her life.
Meyerton SAPS members also educated residents about domestic violence, alcohol abuse, human trafficking, protection orders and the use of Victim Friendly Facilities, while about 100 awareness pamphlets were distributed.
Meyerton SAPS Communication Officer Constable Nompumelelo Zazini said the campaign aimed to empower and protect the community.
“These programmes give people knowledge, support and hope while helping communities understand their rights and where to get help,” said Zazini.
As part of Child Protection Week activities, officers also visited Siyakhula Care Centre, where they taught children about their rights and responsibilities through games and interactive activities.
