Smash breaks new ground as SuperSport’s first female boxing analyst

Walkerville-based professional boxer Simangele “Smash” Hadebe made South African boxing history when she debuted as SuperSport’s first female boxing analyst and commentator on July 25.

Hadebe joined the commentary team during Aquilla Boxing Promotions’ Knockout Chaos 2 at The Galleria in Sandton, Johannesburg. The professional boxing event was broadcast live on SuperSport.

She provided expert analysis throughout the boxing card, using her technical knowledge and experience as a professional fighter to help viewers understand the action inside the ring.

Her manager, Colleen McAusland, described the appointment as a major milestone for Hadebe and for women in South African boxing.

“Smash continues to show our community what is possible through hard work, discipline and determination,” McAusland said.

She added that Hadebe’s achievement had brought pride to the Walkerville and Midvaal communities.

“Every time she steps into the ring, she represents Walkerville, Midvaal and South Africa with pride. Now she is making history outside the ring as well,” McAusland added.

Hadebe said she felt honoured and humbled when she was informed that she would be joining the SuperSport commentary team.

She said the opportunity was about more than her own career and represented another step forward for women in the sport.

“This is more than a personal achievement. It is another barrier broken for women in boxing, and I hope it inspires young girls to believe they can succeed both inside and outside the ring,” said Smash.

To prepare for the broadcast, Hadebe studied the fighters, reviewed previous bouts and worked closely with the SuperSport production team.

She said her experience as a professional boxer gave her the confidence and technical insight needed to analyse the fights.

The response to her debut has been overwhelmingly positive, with viewers, fellow boxers and members of the boxing fraternity praising her knowledge, professionalism and calm delivery.

Hadebe has been appointed as a freelance boxing analyst and is expected to appear on future SuperSport boxing broadcasts while continuing to compete professionally.

Her focus will now return to the ring ahead of one of the biggest fights of her career.

Hadebe is scheduled to challenge Owethu Rula for the vacant WBF Flyweight World Title on August 22 at GrandWest Casino in Cape Town. The title fight will be contested over 10 rounds.

Speaking to her supporters in Walkerville and Midvaal, Hadebe thanked the community for standing behind her throughout her journey.

“Thank you for believing in me and supporting my journey. This achievement belongs to all of us,” Hadebe said.

She encouraged young people to remain committed to their goals and called on communities to continue supporting local athletes.

“I hope it inspires every young person to dream big, work hard and never give up. Continue supporting local sport because champions are born in our communities,” Smash said.
